What to Expect at a Salvo Soccer Club Tryout

Salvo Soccer Club is an inclusive club where children ages 5 to 18 can explore, grow, and challenge themselves to become great soccer players. Our supportive team of coaches and staff can help your children achieve a well-rounded soccer journey, and it all starts with tryouts.

Tryouts can be nerve-wracking and a little scary, but we have some tips on what to expect at our soccer club tryouts. We will answer some frequently asked questions and provide tips on managing nerves.

How to Prepare for Soccer Tryouts

Preparing for soccer tryouts requires a combination of skills, such as physical conditioning, technical skills, mental preparation, and showcasing your children’s best attributes. Here are some tips on how they can perform the best at Salvo Soccer Club tryouts.

Physical Preparation

If your child plans to try out for a soccer club, starting a few weeks in advance is best. This includes building endurance, strength, and agility

Young players can benefit from playing small-sided games to enhance their general fitness and coordination. Running, jumping, and agility are all important to be a successful soccer player. However, young players do not need to train aggressively–learning to play soccer should be fun, and it should help them improve and learn through regular play and activities.

Teenagers should build their endurance and skills more by incorporating sprinting, interval training, and bodyweight exercises. They can also work on their footwork and agility by using cones or ladders.

Always allow enough time for rest and recovery between tough sessions to avoid injury.

Technical Skills Training

Coaches at all skill levels will assess fundamental soccer skills, so refining these is key. Some skills to work on include:

  • Ball control & dribbling

  • Passing and receiving

  • Shooting & finishing

  • Defensive skills

  • Position specific skills

Mental Preparation for Tryouts

It is important to be in the right mental space for a soccer tryout. Work with your children on their confidence and attitude by encouraging them to stay positive about their abilities. Coaches look for players who are not just skilled but also have a strong mentality and a team-oriented mindset

Tryouts come with a lot of pressure, so help your child focus on what they can control–their attitude, their skills, and their minds. They should take deep breaths and approach each drill with focus. Help your child avoid comparing themselves to others and keep their mind in the present moment.

When preparing to showcase their skills, your child can work on highlighting their strengths, such as enthusiasm, effort, and respect. Teach them about being coachable and receptive to criticism and suggestions. Your child should put forth 100% effort when trying out to show the coaches that your child values players who hustle.

Showcasing Soccer Skills

On the day of tryouts, ensure your child has drank plenty of water and had a healthy meal.

Here are some tips on how they can showcase their skills during tryouts:

  • Warm up seriously and with focus. Spend this time getting in the zone.

  • Be engaged and focused during technical drills.

  • During scrimmages, showcase their ability to play as a team.

  • Stay active throughout the tryouts.

  • Older players should show they can make decisions, stay in position, and have tactical awareness in-game scenarios. They should make smart plays instead of flashy plays.

FAQs About Salvo Soccer Club Tryouts

Here are some questions many parents have about our soccer club tryouts.

  • What will happen before soccer tryouts? Your child will check in with Salvo SC staff and get their tryout number so they can pin on their shorts. Then, their lead will call them onto the field and do a quick group warm-up.

  • What will happen during soccer tryouts? Your child will be expected to participate in all activities, including small-sided games and scrimmages. They are expected to show coaches that they can play as a team. Many technical skills will be assessed, including ball control, shooting, dribbling, and passing.
